<p>Tokyo is Japan’s capital and one of the most exciting cities in the world. It’s a place where traditional culture and modern life exist side by side—where you can visit a historic temple in the morning and explore neon-lit streets at night.</p>

<p>For many travellers, Tokyo is the starting point of a trip to Japan. While it can feel overwhelming at first, the city is incredibly organised and easy to navigate once you understand its layout. Each area has its own distinct atmosphere, making Tokyo feel like a collection of smaller cities rather than one large metropolis.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="what-makes-tokyo-unique"><strong>What Makes Tokyo Unique?</strong></h2>

<p>What sets Tokyo apart is its variety. Few cities offer such a wide range of experiences in one place.</p>

<p>You can explore centuries-old temples, shop in some of the world’s most advanced retail districts, enjoy peaceful parks and gardens, and experience cutting-edge technology—all within a single day.</p>

<p>Tokyo is also one of the best food cities in the world. From high-end sushi restaurants to small ramen shops and casual izakayas, the quality and variety of food is exceptional at every price level.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="iconic-tokyo-attractions">Best Areas to Explore in Tokyo</h2>

<p>Tokyo is made up of distinct neighbourhoods, each offering a completely different experience. Understanding these areas will help you plan your visit more effectively.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="shibuya">Shibuya</h3>

<p>Shibuya is one of Tokyo’s most famous districts, known for the iconic Shibuya Crossing and its lively atmosphere. The area is filled with shops, restaurants, and entertainment options, making it a great place to experience modern Tokyo.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/shibuya-crossing.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&#038;ssl=1" alt="A Comprehensive Guide to Tokyo" class="wp-image-400" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/shibuya-crossing-scaled.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/shibuya-crossing-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/shibuya-crossing-scaled.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/shibuya-crossing-scaled.jpg?resize=1536%2C1025&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/shibuya-crossing-scaled.jpg?resize=2048%2C1366&amp;ssl=1 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by&nbsp;<a href="https://unsplash.com/@magict1911?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Timo Volz</a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/shibuya?orientation=landscape&amp;utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>

<p>It’s also a popular nightlife area, with plenty of bars and casual dining spots.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="shinjuku">Shinjuku</h3>

<p>Shinjuku is a major transport hub and one of the busiest areas in Tokyo. It’s known for its skyscrapers, shopping, and nightlife.</p>

<p>The district is home to Kabukicho, Tokyo’s entertainment and nightlife area, as well as quieter spots like Shinjuku Gyoen, a large park that offers a peaceful escape from the city.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="asakusa">Asakusa</h3>

<p>Asakusa offers a glimpse into Tokyo’s past. The area is centred around Senso-ji Temple, the city’s oldest and most famous temple.</p>

<p>The surrounding streets are lined with traditional shops and food stalls, making it a great place to experience a more historic side of Tokyo.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="harajuku">Harajuku</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="1024" height="678" src="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/harajuku-street.jpg?resize=1024%2C678&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-401" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/harajuku-street-scaled.jpg?resize=1024%2C678&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/harajuku-street-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/harajuku-street-scaled.jpg?resize=768%2C509&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/harajuku-street-scaled.jpg?resize=1536%2C1017&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/harajuku-street-scaled.jpg?resize=2048%2C1356&amp;ssl=1 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p>Harajuku is known for its youth culture and unique fashion. Takeshita Street is the centre of the action, filled with trendy shops, street food, and colourful crowds.</p>

<p>Just a short walk away, Meiji Shrine provides a completely different atmosphere, with a quiet forest setting that feels far removed from the busy streets nearby.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="ginza">Ginza</h3>

<p>Ginza is Tokyo’s upscale shopping and dining district. It’s known for luxury brands, department stores, and high-end restaurants.</p>

<p id="iconic-tokyo-attractions">The area has a more refined and relaxed atmosphere compared to other parts of the city, especially in the evening.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="shopping-and-fashion-districts"><strong>Top Things to Do in Tokyo</strong></h2>

<p>Tokyo offers an almost endless number of attractions, but there are a few experiences that most visitors should prioritise.</p>

<p>Visit Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa to experience one of Tokyo’s most important cultural landmarks. Then head to Shibuya Crossing to see one of the busiest intersections in the world.</p>

<p>Observation decks such as Tokyo Skytree and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building offer excellent views of the city. For something more relaxed, parks like Ueno Park and Shinjuku Gyoen provide green spaces to unwind.</p>

<p>Tokyo also offers a range of unique experiences, from themed cafés to interactive museums and seasonal events throughout the year.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="culinary-experiences"><strong>Food in Tokyo</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="day-trips-from-tokyo"><strong>Day Trips from Tokyo</strong></h3>

<p>One of Tokyo’s biggest advantages is its location. Thanks to Japan’s efficient transport system, there are several excellent day trips that can easily be done in a single day.</p>

<p><strong>Hakone</strong> is a popular choice, known for its views of Mount Fuji, hot springs, and scenic landscapes. It’s a great option if you want to experience nature without travelling too far from the city.</p>

<p><strong>Nikko</strong> offers a mix of history and natural beauty, with ornate shrines set among forested mountains. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage area and one of the most culturally significant destinations near Tokyo.</p>

<p>For a coastal escape, <strong>Kamakura</strong> is an easy and rewarding trip. The city is home to the Great Buddha, historic temples, and relaxed seaside scenery.</p>

<p>If you’re looking for something more modern, <strong>Yokohama</strong> offers a waterfront setting, shopping, and one of Japan’s largest Chinatowns—all just a short train ride from Tokyo.</p>

<p>These day trips are ideal if you want to add variety to your itinerary while still using Tokyo as your base.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/nikko-day-trip.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-403" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/nikko-day-trip-scaled.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/nikko-day-trip-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/nikko-day-trip-scaled.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/nikko-day-trip-scaled.jpg?resize=1536%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/nikko-day-trip-scaled.jpg?resize=2048%2C1365&amp;ssl=1 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by&nbsp;<a href="https://unsplash.com/@axpphotography?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AXP Photography</a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/nikko?orientation=landscape&amp;utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>

<p>Tokyo offers countless attractions, experiences, and flavours to suit every traveller. From its iconic sights and historic districts to its bustling shopping streets and culinary delights, Tokyo truly has something for everyone. Whether you&#8217;re planning a short visit or an extended stay, I hope this guide to Tokyo will help you uncover the many facets of Japan&#8217;s dynamic capital.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="off-the-beaten-path-experiences"><strong>Off the Beaten Path in Tokyo</strong></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="640" src="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/odaiba-beach-view.jpg?resize=1024%2C640&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-402" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/odaiba-beach-view-scaled.jpg?resize=1024%2C640&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/odaiba-beach-view-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C187&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/odaiba-beach-view-scaled.jpg?resize=768%2C480&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/odaiba-beach-view-scaled.jpg?resize=1536%2C960&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/odaiba-beach-view-scaled.jpg?resize=2048%2C1280&amp;ssl=1 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by&nbsp;<a href="https://unsplash.com/@miyatankun?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Takashi Miyazaki</a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/R_kNb6gZ_xk?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>

<p>While Tokyo’s main districts are well worth visiting, some of the city’s most memorable experiences can be found in quieter, lesser-known neighbourhoods.</p>

<p>Areas like <strong>Yanaka</strong> offer a glimpse into old Tokyo, with narrow streets, traditional shops, and a slower pace of life that feels far removed from the busy city centre. It’s one of the few places where you can still experience a more nostalgic atmosphere.</p>

<p><strong>Shimokitazawa</strong> is another great option, known for its vintage shops, independent cafés, and relaxed, creative vibe. It’s popular with locals but often overlooked by first-time visitors.</p>

<p>For something a little different, <strong>Daikanyama</strong> offers a more refined experience, with stylish boutiques, modern architecture, and well-designed cafés. It’s a great place to slow down and explore at your own pace.</p>

<p>Exploring these areas gives you a deeper understanding of Tokyo beyond the major tourist spots—and often leads to some of the most memorable moments of your trip.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="parks-and-gardens">Getting Around Tokyo</h2>

<p>Tokyo’s public transport system is one of the most efficient in the world.</p>

<p>The train and subway networks connect all major areas of the city, making it easy to get around. Using an IC card such as Suica or Pasmo simplifies travel, allowing you to tap in and out without buying individual tickets.</p>

<p id="parks-and-gardens">While the system may seem complex at first, signage is clear and available in English, and most routes are straightforward once you get used to them.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<p>Tokyo is a year-round destination, with each season offering a different experience.</p>

<p>Spring is one of the most popular times to visit, with cherry blossoms attracting visitors from around the world. Autumn is also a great time, with cooler temperatures and colourful foliage.</p>

<p>Summer can be hot and humid, but it’s also festival season. Winter is quieter, with clear skies and fewer crowds.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="travel-tips-for-tokyo">Travel Tips for Tokyo</h2>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Get an IC card for easy transport</li>

<li>Avoid peak rush hours on trains</li>

<li>Wear comfortable shoes for walking</li>

<li>Carry some cash for smaller shops</li>

<li>Plan your days by area to save time</li>
</ul>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="is-tokyo-worth-visiting">Is Tokyo Worth Visiting?</h2>

<p>Tokyo is one of the most diverse and exciting cities in the world. Whether you’re interested in history, food, shopping, or modern culture, there is something here for everyone.</p>

<p>It’s not just a place to visit—it’s a city to experience, and one that often becomes a highlight of any trip to Japan.</p>

<p>Kyoto is the cultural heart of Japan and the best place to experience the country’s traditional side. As the former imperial capital, it is home to countless temples, shrines, and preserved historic districts.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Begin your visit in the Higashiyama District, where narrow streets, wooden buildings, and historic temples create a timeless atmosphere. Highlights include Kiyomizu-dera Temple and the nearby Gion district, where you may even spot a geisha.</p>

<p>No trip to Kyoto is complete without visiting Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its thousands of red torii gates. For a more peaceful setting, head to Arashiyama, where the bamboo grove and Tenryu-ji Temple offer a quieter, scenic escape.</p>

<p>Kyoto is ideal for travellers looking to slow down and connect with Japan’s history, culture, and seasonal beauty.</p>

<p>Kanazawa is often referred to as “Little Kyoto” thanks to its well-preserved districts and strong cultural heritage.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The city is home to Kenrokuen Garden, considered one of Japan’s most beautiful landscape gardens. The nearby Higashi Chaya District offers a glimpse into traditional geisha culture, with historic teahouses and narrow streets.</p>

<p>Kanazawa is also known for its fresh seafood and high-quality sushi, thanks to its location along the Sea of Japan.</p>

<p>Less crowded than Kyoto but equally rich in culture, Kanazawa is a great choice for travellers looking to explore somewhere slightly off the main tourist route.</p>

<p class="p3">Japan’s major cities—Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka—continue to dominate travel itineraries. But beyond these well-trodden routes lies a region still largely undiscovered by international visitors: Tohoku.</p>

<p class="p3">Now, thanks to a major update from <strong>East Japan Railway Company</strong>, exploring this beautiful and culturally rich region has become significantly easier. The new <strong>JR EAST PASS</strong>, launched on 14 March 2026, is designed to encourage travellers to venture further into eastern Japan—and it might just change the way people experience the country.</p>

<div data-vi-partner-id="P00038567" data-vi-widget-ref="W-3a7116b2-4e93-4d7d-b07a-d5ad03e94efb"></div>
<script async src="https://www.viator.com/orion/partner/widget.js"></script>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="a-new-era-for-regional-travel-in-japan">A New Era for Regional Travel in Japan</h2>

<p class="p3">The <a href="https://www.jreast.co.jp/en/multi/pass/eastpass.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">updated JR EAST PASS</a> replaces the previous regional passes with one unified option, offering far greater flexibility and convenience. Rather than juggling multiple tickets or passes, travellers can now move seamlessly across eastern Japan using a single rail pass.</p>

<p class="p3">This is a strategic move by JR East, aiming to boost tourism in Tohoku—a region that currently accounts for just 1.5% of overnight stays by inbound visitors. The goal is ambitious: increase that number to 5% by 2034 by making access easier and more appealing.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="p3">And honestly, it makes sense. Tohoku has everything—stunning seasonal landscapes, historic towns, festivals, hot springs, and far fewer crowds.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="what-is-the-jr-east-pass">What Is the new JR EAST PASS?</h2>

<p class="p3">The new <strong>JR EAST PASS</strong> offers unlimited travel on JR East lines, including:</p>

<p class="p1">Shinkansen (bullet trains) Limited express and express trains Local and rapid services Select partner railways like the Tokyo Monorail</p>

<p class="p3">Even better, the pass includes reserved seating in ordinary cars, which is a big advantage during peak travel periods.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="pricing-options">Pricing Options</h3>

<p class="p3">The pass comes in two straightforward formats:</p>

<p class="p1">5 consecutive days: ¥35,000 (Child: ¥17,500) 10 consecutive days: ¥50,000 (Child: ¥25,000)&nbsp;</p>

<p class="p3">For travellers planning multi-city trips, especially those including Shinkansen journeys, this can represent excellent value.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="why-tohoku-should-be-on-your-radar">Why Tohoku Should Be on Your Radar</h2>

<p class="p3">One of the biggest selling points of this new pass is how it unlocks Tohoku as a year-round destination.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="&#x1f338;-spring-cherry-blossom-chasing"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f338.png" alt="🌸" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> Spring: Cherry Blossom Chasing</h3>

<p class="p3">Tohoku’s cherry blossom season arrives later than Tokyo, making it perfect for travellers who missed peak bloom further south. Highlights include:</p>

<p class="p1"><strong>Miharu Takizakura</strong> – one of Japan’s most famous weeping cherry trees<br><strong>Hirosaki Park</strong> – often considered one of the best sakura locations in Japan</p>

<p>The <strong>“Golden Route”</strong> is one of the most popular itineraries for first-time visitors to Japan. <p>The Golden Route covers Japan’s most famous attractions and provides a perfect mix of modern and traditional Japan. Typically, it includes Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka, and sometimes Hiroshima as an optional extension. Let’s take a closer look at how to travel this route and how many days you’ll need to make the most of it.</p>

<p><strong>Travel Tip:</strong></p>

<p>Osaka is famous for its food, especially in the Dotonbori area. The city is also home to a large number of shopping districts. If you plan to visit Universal Studios Japan, it’s a good idea to allocate an entire day for it, as it can be a full-day experience.</p>

<p><strong>Recommended Days:</strong> 2 days. Osaka is relatively compact and easy to navigate. You can spend one day exploring the city and another visiting <a href="https://www.klook.com/activity/46604-universal-studios-japan-e-ticket-osaka-qr-code-direct-entry/?aid=34190" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Universal Studios</a> or making a short trip to nearby areas like <a href="https://visitjapanplus.com/kobe-japans-vibrant-port-city/" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="274" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kobe</a>.</p>

<p><strong>Travel Tip:</strong></p>

<p>If you want to extend your trip beyond the main Golden Route, Hiroshima is well-connected via the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Osaka or Kyoto. You can reach Hiroshima in about two hours by train.</p>

<p>Japan’s Golden Route is well-served by the extensive rail network, particularly the <strong>Shinkansen (bullet train)</strong>. The JR Pass, available only to foreign visitors, offers unlimited travel on most JR trains, including the Shinkansen. Here’s a quick guide on how to travel between the main destinations:</p>

<p>• <strong>Tokyo to Hakone</strong>: About 1.5 hours via the Odakyu Line from Shinjuku Station to Hakone-Yumoto.</p>

<p>• <strong>Hakone to Kyoto</strong>: About 2 hours by Shinkansen from Odawara Station.</p>

<p>• <strong>Kyoto to Osaka</strong>: About 15 minutes by Shinkansen or local train.</p>

<p>• <strong>Osaka to Nara</strong>: About 45 minutes by local train.</p>

<p>• <strong>Osaka to Hiroshima</strong>: About 2 hours by Shinkansen.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/shinkansen-bullet-train.jpg?resize=1024%2C682&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-989" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/shinkansen-bullet-train.jpg?resize=1024%2C682&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/shinkansen-bullet-train.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/shinkansen-bullet-train.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/shinkansen-bullet-train.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p><strong>Recommended Total Days for the Golden Route</strong>: 8-12 days, depending on your pace and whether you include optional side trips like Hiroshima or more time in Osaka and Kyoto.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="travelling-beyond-the-golden-route-more-time-and-deeper-experiences"><strong>Travelling Beyond the Golden Route: More Time and Deeper Experiences</strong></h2>

<p>While the Golden Route offers a convenient and accessible way to explore Japan, venturing beyond these well-travelled cities will require more time and a bit more planning. Many of the alternative regions, such as the Tohoku region, Kyushu, or Hokkaido, are more spread out and less accessible by bullet train. For example, exploring the serene mountain towns of Shikoku or hiking in the wilderness of Hokkaido will need extra travel days and a willingness to slow down and soak in the atmosphere.</p>

<p>• <strong>Tohoku</strong>: A trip to this northern region could easily take an additional 5-7 days, especially if you wish to visit Lake Towada, Aomori, and Hiraizumi.</p>

<p>• <strong>Shikoku</strong>: The Shikoku pilgrimage route and the remote Iya Valley could add another 4-6 days to your itinerary.</p>

<p>• <strong>Kyushu</strong>: You’ll want at least 5 days to explore Kyushu’s diverse cities, volcanoes, and hot springs.</p>

<p>• <strong>Hokkaido</strong>: For nature lovers, Hokkaido could be a standalone trip of 7-10 days, particularly in the summer when its flower fields are in full bloom or in the winter for its famous ski resorts.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/japan-jigokudani-hakkaido.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-990" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/japan-jigokudani-hakkaido.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/japan-jigokudani-hakkaido.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/japan-jigokudani-hakkaido.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/japan-jigokudani-hakkaido.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p>These regions offer unique cultural experiences, untouched natural beauty, and a slower pace, but they do demand more time and effort to explore fully. Travellers who push beyond the Golden Route will find rewards in discovering a Japan that few tourists experience—a land of hidden temples, remote hot springs, and untouched landscapes far from the urban centres.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="conclusion-the-golden-route-and-the-path-less-travelled"><strong>Conclusion: The Golden Route and the Path Less Travelled</strong></h2>

<p>The Golden Route offers a fantastic introduction to Japan for first-time visitors, hitting all the major highlights in a short amount of time. With efficient public transportation and plenty of attractions, it’s a perfect fit for those with a limited time frame. However, for those seeking a more immersive experience, Japan’s less-explored regions offer their own treasures. From the tranquil beauty of Tohoku to the rugged landscapes of Hokkaido and the cultural richness of Shikoku, there’s a wealth of adventures beyond the Golden Route waiting to be discovered.</p>

<p>Whether you choose to stick to the Golden Route or extend your travels into the less-known corners of Japan, the country offers something for every traveller—no matter where you roam.</p>

<p><strong>Experience the Sumo Tournament:</strong> The Grand Sumo Tournament in Osaka is a cultural phenomenon, showcasing the power, technique, and tradition of Japan&#8217;s national sport. Attend the early matches to witness the rising stars and the intense competition. The atmosphere is electric, with fans cheering on their favourite wrestlers.</p>

<p><strong>Himeji Day Trip:</strong> Time your trip right to experience Himeji Castle in full bloom. As one of Japan&#8217;s original 12 castles and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Himeji Castle is a sight to behold, especially during the cherry blossom season. The castle grounds are home to hundreds of cherry trees, offering a breathtaking backdrop of pink blooms against the stunning white architecture of the castle.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="679" src="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/DSC_0106.jpeg?resize=1024%2C679&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-919" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/DSC_0106.jpeg?resize=1024%2C679&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/DSC_0106.jpeg?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/DSC_0106.jpeg?resize=768%2C509&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/DSC_0106.jpeg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

Dotonbori is a must-visit for food enthusiasts, with its dazzling array of street food and neon lights. Osaka Castle, set in a sprawling park, will be surrounded by the early stages of cherry blossoms, making it a picturesque spot for <strong><em>hanami</em></strong> (flower viewing), especially towards the end of the sumo tournament as blossoms are expected to start flowering around March 25, reaching full bloom by April 2.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Day 4-6: Kyoto &#8211; A Cultural Tapestry Amidst Sakura</strong></h3>

<p><strong>Accommodation:</strong> Immerse yourself in Japanese tradition by staying in a ryokan in Gion or Higashiyama, such as <a href="https://www.booking.com/hotel/jp/ishibekoji-muan-kyoto.en.html?aid=1352946&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ishibekoji Muan</a> or <a href="https://www.booking.com/hotel/jp/hyatt-regency-kyoto.en.html?aid=1352946&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hyatt Regency Kyoto</a>.</p>

<p><strong>Cherry Blossoms in Kyoto:</strong> Kyoto&#8217;s historical sites provide a stunning backdrop for cherry blossom viewing. The Philosopher&#8217;s Path, a stone walkway lined with hundreds of cherry trees, will be an ideal spot for contemplation and enjoyment of the fleeting beauty of sakura, with expected flowering from <strong>March 24 and full bloom by April 1</strong>. Maruyama Park, with its weeping cherry trees, becomes a popular gathering place for hanami parties.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="723" src="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/96AA41BA-187D-4C58-91CA-56A6BA05A1E5.jpeg?resize=1024%2C723&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-921" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/96AA41BA-187D-4C58-91CA-56A6BA05A1E5.jpeg?resize=1024%2C723&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/96AA41BA-187D-4C58-91CA-56A6BA05A1E5.jpeg?resize=300%2C212&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/96AA41BA-187D-4C58-91CA-56A6BA05A1E5.jpeg?resize=768%2C542&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/96AA41BA-187D-4C58-91CA-56A6BA05A1E5.jpeg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p><strong>Cultural Exploration:</strong> Visit the golden pavilion of Kinkaku-ji, shimmering in the reflection of its surrounding pond, and the zen garden of Ryoan-ji, offering a peaceful retreat. <p>When travelling through Tokyo, there&#8217;s so much more to do than just sightseeing and eating. How about stepping into the shoes of a sushi chef or crafting your own plastic food replicas? Tokyo&#8217;s culinary delights, diversity and innovation, offers a plethora of food-related experiences that go beyond the dining table. Today, we&#8217;re thrilled to introduce three unique foodie experiences that will not only satisfy your palate but also spark your creativity and deepen your understanding of Japanese food culture.</p>

<div class="wp-block-rank-math-toc-block has-small-font-size" id="rank-math-toc"><h4>In This Post</h4><nav><ul><li class=""><a href="#tokyo-sushi-making-class-at-a-100-year-old-sushi-bar">Tokyo Sushi-Making Class at a 100-Year-Old Sushi Bar</a></li><li class=""><a href="#sushi-making-class-with-a-professional-chef">Sushi Making Class with a Professional Chef</a></li><li class=""><a href="#japanese-fake-food-sample-making-workshop">Japanese Fake Food Sample Making Workshop</a></li></ul></nav></div>

<p>Tokyo, Japan&#8217;s bustling capital, is a city that never fails to impress. From its towering skyscrapers and neon-lit streets to its serene temples and beautiful cherry blossom trees, Tokyo is a city of contrasts where tradition and modernity coexist. But it&#8217;s not just the sights that captivate visitors; it&#8217;s also the food. Tokyo boasts more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city in the world, and its culinary scene is as diverse as it is delicious. But why stop at just eating the food? Why not learn to create it yourself?</p>

<p>Our first stop is a <a href="https://www.byfood.com/experiences/tokyo-sushi-making-class-at-a-100-year-old-sushi-bar-508?via=visitjapanplus" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sushi-making class</a> held at a 100-year-old sushi restaurant in Shinjuku-ku. This isn&#8217;t just any sushi class; it&#8217;s a journey into the heart of Japanese culinary tradition. Hosted by Kazuki, the president of Sushi Bar Yachiyo, this class will teach you the time-honoured practices of sushi craftsmanship.</p>

<p>You&#8217;ll learn how to make five types of sushi, including nigiri sushi and tamagoyaki sushi, using two traditional methods of shaping sushi: &#8216;kotegaeshi&#8217; and &#8216;tategaeshi&#8217;. After the class, you&#8217;ll enjoy your handmade sushi lunch and engage in a Q&amp;A session with your host. This is a unique opportunity to learn from a master and gain a deeper understanding of the art of sushi making.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="sushi-making-class-with-a-professional-chef"><strong>Sushi Making Class with a Professional Chef</strong></h3>

<p>Next, we have another <a href="https://www.byfood.com/experiences/sushi-making-class-with-professional-chef-standard-course-506?via=visitjapanplus" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sushi-making class</a>, this time with a professional chef in Tsukiji, Tokyo&#8217;s world-famous fish market. This private experience will not only teach you the fundamentals of sushi making but also introduce you to Japanese dining etiquette.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex">

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="819" height="1024" data-id="873" src="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/sushi-plate.jpg?resize=819%2C1024&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-873" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/sushi-plate.jpg?resize=819%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 819w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/sushi-plate.jpg?resize=240%2C300&amp;ssl=1 240w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/sushi-plate.jpg?resize=768%2C960&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/sushi-plate.jpg?resize=1229%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1229w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/sushi-plate.jpg?w=1440&amp;ssl=1 1440w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px" /></figure>
</figure>

<p>You&#8217;ll get to make nigiri sushi and hand-rolled sushi, and even taste real wasabi, a luxury in Japan. The highlight of this class is the chef&#8217;s horse mackerel sashimi cutting show, a demonstration of the chef&#8217;s skilled knifework. This is a rare chance to see a professional at work and learn the secrets of sushi making from an expert.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="japanese-fake-food-sample-making-workshop"><strong>Japanese Fake Food Sample Making Workshop</strong></h3>

<p>Finally, for something a bit different, check out this <a href="https://www.byfood.com/experiences/japanese-fake-food-sample-making-workshop-tokyo?via=visitjapanplus" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Japanese fake food sample making workshop</a> in Tokyo. Fake food samples are a common sight outside Japanese restaurants, acting as a visual menu. In this workshop, you&#8217;ll learn how to make your own food sample, choosing from a range of dishes like fruit tarts and ramen bowls.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/fake-plastic-food-japan.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-874" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/fake-plastic-food-japan.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/fake-plastic-food-japan.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/fake-plastic-food-japan.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/fake-plastic-food-japan.jpg?resize=1536%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/visitjapanplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/fake-plastic-food-japan.jpg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

Don&#8217;t forget to try the Skytree&#8217;s original sweets and pastries, perfect for an indulgent treat or as unique gifts to take home.</p>

<p>The Tokyo Skytree offers more than just spectacular vistas. The lower floors house the Skytree Town, a large shopping and entertainment complex. During cherry blossom season, you can see the city blanketed in pink, while autumn brings a riot of reds and oranges. Nighttime offers a dazzling display of city lights, with the Skytree itself illuminated in seasonal and special patterns.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="practical-information"><strong>Practical Information</strong></h2>

<p>The Tokyo Skytree opens from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. It&#8217;s recommended to book your tickets in advance, which can be done online <a href="https://www.viator.com/tours/Tokyo/Tokyo-Skytree-Admission-Ticket/d334-293458P3?pid=P00038567&amp;mcid=42383&amp;medium=link" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a>. <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="the-origins-and-evolution-of-kaiseki">The Origins and Evolution of Kaiseki</h3>

<p><em>Kaiseki</em> cuisine traces its origins back to the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, where simple, elegant meals were served alongside matcha green tea. Over time, it evolved into a more elaborate and sophisticated dining experience, reflecting the refined tastes of Japan&#8217;s upper class. Today, it is celebrated as the pinnacle of Japanese haute cuisine, with multi-course meals that showcase the chef&#8217;s skill and creativity.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="the-principles-of-kaiseki-cuisine">The Principles of Kaiseki Cuisine</h3>

<p><em>Kaiseki</em> is guided by a set of principles that focus on seasonality, harmony, and balance. These principles shape each element of the dining experience, from the selection of ingredients to the presentation of each dish.</p>

<p><strong>Seasonality</strong> &#8211; Kaiseki cuisine places a strong emphasis on the use of seasonal ingredients, allowing diners to experience the true flavours of each season. Ingredients are sourced at the peak of their freshness and flavour, often from local regions.</p>

<p><strong>Harmony</strong> &#8211; A kaiseki meal aims to achieve harmony in taste, texture, and presentation. Each dish is carefully crafted to complement the others, creating a harmonious dining experience that engages all the senses.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="the-art-of-presentation-in-kaiseki">The Art of Presentation in Kaiseki</h3>

<p>In <em>kaiseki</em> cuisine, presentation is just as important as taste. Each dish is meticulously plated, often using beautiful ceramics and tableware that reflect the season and theme of the meal. Dishes may be garnished with seasonal leaves, flowers, or other natural elements, further emphasising the connection between kaiseki and the natural world.</p>

<p>While kaiseki restaurants can be found across Japan, Kyoto is considered the heart of <em>kaiseki</em> cuisine, with many renowned establishments offering unforgettable dining experiences. For travellers looking to immerse themselves in <em>kaiseki</em> dining, here are some tips to enhance your experience:</p>

<p><strong>Reservations</strong> &#8211; Kaiseki restaurants often have limited seating and can be in high demand, so it&#8217;s essential to make a reservation in advance. Some establishments may require a referral or the assistance of a hotel concierge to secure a booking.</p>

<p>We<a href="https://www.byfood.com?via=visitjapanplus" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> highly recommend byFood for all your restaurant reservation</a> needs. They provide a great service and allow you to book some of the top restaurants in Tokyo, Kyoto and more. </p>

<p><strong>Dress code</strong> &#8211; Many kaiseki restaurants have a dress code, typically requesting that guests dress in smart casual attire. It&#8217;s a good idea to check the dress code beforehand to ensure you are appropriately dressed for the occasion.</p>

<p><strong>Allergies and dietary restrictions</strong> &#8211; While some kaiseki restaurants may be able to accommodate certain dietary restrictions, it&#8217;s important to communicate these when making your reservation. Keep in mind that traditional kaiseki cuisine may include a variety of ingredients, such as fish, shellfish, and meat, which may be challenging for some diners.</p>

<p><strong>Budget</strong> &#8211; Kaiseki dining can be a costly experience, with some establishments charging several hundred pounds per person. Be prepared for the expense, and remember that the cost reflects the quality of the ingredients, the skill of the chef, and the overall dining experience.</p>
