Is it possible to visit Hiroshima from Osaka in a day? Simple answer is yes! If you’re based in Kansai (Osaka area), this makes for one of the best day trips in western Japan.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through a simple and realistic one-day itinerary, including transport tips, timing, and what to expect.

Getting to Hiroshima from Osaka

Travelling from Osaka to Hiroshima is quick and straightforward using the Shinkansen.

The journey from Shin-Osaka Station to Hiroshima Station takes around 90 minutes on the fastest trains. Services run frequently throughout the day, making it easy to plan a flexible itinerary.

If you’re using the Japan Rail Pass or a regional pass such as the JR Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass, the journey is fully covered.

For a day trip, aim to leave Osaka between 7:30 and 8:00 am to maximise your time.

Visiting the Peace Memorial Park

The first stop was the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, located about 15 minutes from the station.

The standard route is:

1. Train from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi Station (25–30 minutes)
2. Ferry to Miyajima (10 minutes)

The ferry is covered by the JR Pass. However, there is now a ¥100 visitor tax added to the fare, so expect to pay around ¥280–300 one way in total.

Alternatively, you can take a direct ferry from near the Peace Park to Miyajima. This takes longer (around 45 minutes) but avoids transferring trains.

Miyajima is famous for the Itsukushima Shrine and its large torii gate, which appears to float on the water at high tide.

There are many restaurants near the ferry terminal, making it a good place to stop for lunch.

Deer on the island

You’ll notice deer roaming freely across the island. They are used to people, but feeding them is discouraged, and it’s best to keep your belongings out of reach.

Allow around 3–4 hours to explore Miyajima at a relaxed pace.

Dinner in Hiroshima: Okonomiyaki

Before heading back to Osaka, return to Hiroshima city for dinner.

A popular spot is Okonomimura, a building filled with small restaurants specialising in Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki.

Unlike the Osaka version, Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is layered and often includes noodles. Sitting at the counter and watching it being cooked in front of you is part of the experience.
